The
Netherlands is 41,526 sq km and has a population
of 16.5 million; it became an independent country
in 1815. The Netherlands is world famous for
it’s capital city,
Amsterdam and Zuid-Holland a popular holiday
destination. However the Netherlands has a lot
more to offer and is actually compiled from 12
provinces, Drenthe, Flevoland, Friesland (Fryslan),
Gelderland, Groningen, Limburg, Noord-Brabant,
Noord-Holland, Overijssel, Utrecht, Zeeland,
and Zuid-Holland.

Amsterdam
is Europe’s fourth
largest tourist destination and is visited by
more than 2.5 million tourists each year. The
city offers a diverse range of attractions with
a large assortment of museums, also the House
where Anne Frank is believed to of hid.
Amsterdam
is also famous for its red light district and
for their Governments controversial stance
on “soft drugs”.
Amsterdam is the worlds leading diamond polishing
and cutting centre and attracts a large number
of business and tourist visitors each year.
Zuid-Holland
more commonly known as Holland to us Brits
is renowned for it’s
windmills, cheese, tulips and hopefully not too
many mice. A large part of Holland is formed
from reclaimed land. Holland is surrounded by
water on three of its sides and for this reason
a lot of windmills were built to drain the land
and keep it dry. At its peak there were more
than 10,000 and the largest mills were believed
to of been able to lift 10,000 gallons of water
per minute. Now only 1000 mills remain, however
they are now protected.
One of Holland major exports is cheese, Edam,
Gouda and Leiden; interestingly Edam is the only
cheese that remains perfectly round. Holland
also attracts a large number of tourists to cycle
through the colourful bulb fields and visit the
tulip festival.
