The
city dates back to 1043 when it was designated
as a centre of commerce by Leofric, Earl
of Mercia, the husband of Lady Godiva. Wool
was the mainstay of Coventry for some 500
years. In the 1400s the city ranked with
York, Bristol and Plymouth having added colour
to its trade in cloth and thread. The colour,
a non-fading blue came to be known as "true
blue."
During the Civil War the city's Church of
St. John became a prison for captured Royalists,
giving rise to the phrase "being sent
to Coventry" meaning banned from society.
In the 1800s new industries replaced a failing
trade in silk weaving and clockmaking. Engineering
took over. Daimler and Humber set up the
first of many car factories in 1896. Today,
Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and Rover have plants
in Coventry.
