Derby
has a history that dates to Roman times,
but it was "created" a city in
1977 by Queen Elizabeth II.
Derby, since fairly early on, has been busy
making things. It was soap, beer and cloth
until the early 1700s when silk mills began
to appear. The porcelain industry came to
town in 1756 with William Duesbury, founder
of what is today Royal Crown Derby Porcelain.
In the 1800s railway workshops appeared and
in 1907 Rolls Royce came to Derby. A statue
of Sir Henry Royce, founder and engineer
is in the city's park.
Visit the Derby Museum and Art Gallery and
the Industrial Museum for a glimpse into
the past of this manufacturing city.
