Exeter
is an historic cathedral city that takes
its name from the river Exe. It was a trading
port in Medieval times, but today the once
busy port is no longer. The Ship Canal, built
in 1564, is now used mostly by pleasure boats.
The city traces its roots back to the Roman
era. Portions of wall they built around the
town can still be seen to this day. Following
on the heels of the Romans came in succession
the Saxons, the Danes and the Normans. Exeter
opened it gates to William the Conquerer
after an 18 day seige in 1068. Norman influence
is evident in the architecture of the Catherdral
of St. Mary and St. Peter, whose massive
twin Norman towers are reminiscent of castle
strongholds make it unique it Britain.
