Founded
in the sixth century, Ipswich is a port city
at the point where the river Gipping meets
the estuary of the River Orwell. Originally
called Gippeswic, it has been on the map
since the Stone Age and was both a Roman
and Anglo-Saxon settlement before being chartered
as a town in 1200 by King John. Relics from
the Romans and Anglo-Saxons can be found
in the Ipswich Museum.
Of note architecturally are the Tudor Christ
church Mansion, a 16th century house that
is now a museum with period rooms and paintings
by Constable and Gainsborough. In the Butter
Market is the Ancient House, an excellent
example of carved plasterwork dating to the
15th century.
