Newcastle
is not the typical overbuilt and overcrowded
Victorian industrial city. With its open
city centre and classical architecture it
looks as if its growth was planned and indeed
it was, in the early 1820s by John Dobson,
an architect; Richard Granger, a builder
and John Clayton the town clerk. The result
of their work is a city centre that is open
and beautiful. The Central Station on Neville
Street is Dobson's masterpiece, which is
complemented by modern landmarks such as
Newcastle University.
Newcastle traces its name back to the new
castle that was built over a Roman fort by
Normans in the 13th century. Not much is
left of the castle but there is much to see
in Newcastle including architecture that
dates from the 17th century Guildhall, Quayside,
to the award winning Civic Centre opened
in 1968. One can explore the city's fine
museums: the Museum of Science and Engineering,
The Hatton Art Gallery, Hancock Museum, the
John Joicey Museum of arms and armour, the
Laing Art Gallery with its Edwardian Baroque
collection or the bagpipe museum in the Black
Gate.
