Portsmouth
is Britain's main naval station and has been
since 1540 when Henry VII expanded on the
docks and built them into the first royal

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle actually practised
medicine in Southsea and wrote his first
Sherlock Holmes novel there. H. G. Wells
worked in Portsmouth and Rudyard Kipling,
while his parents were in India, spent six
years of his childhood in Southsea. Portsmouth
is also the port from which Admiral Nelson
left aboard "HMS Victory" to win
the Battle at Trafalgar where he was killed.
