Croatia is situated in South-eastern
Europe adjacent to the Adriatic Sea and flanked
by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. Croatia

there are also Serbian, Bosnian, Hungarian and

Zagreb and has a population of 1 million. The
existence of Zagreb was first recorded in 1094
and was a leading cultural, industrial and scientific
centre.
Other main residential areas
are Osijek in the northwest, and the ports of
Rijeka, and Split in the south. The official
currency of Croatia is the kuna. The kuna is

summer and the best time to visit, temperatures
may reach up to 38°C, while surface water
temperatures are an enjoyable 26°C. Winter
in Croatia can be quite cold.

Croatia
has over seven hundred different types of wine,
not to mention brandies, fruit juices, beer
and mineral waters. In the south, the traditional
drink is “Bevanda” a
rich red wine mixed with water, while in the
northwest, people drink “Gemist” a
dry, aromatic wine mixed with mineral water.
You
can’t leave Croatia
without trying some Maraschino – a liqueur
made from marasca cherries; these grow best in
the surroundings of Zadar. The Karst landscape,
which has red soil, lots of sunshine and bura
winds – these conditions create the aroma
of this liqueur, which was shipped from Zadar
all over the world in the 17th and 18th centuries.
