Moving to Delhi, the capital city of India, holds the distinction of being both very ancient and very modern. You will find crumbling old 16th century walls sharing space with the city’s most modern public transport, the Metro, on the busy roads of this big metropolis.
There is nothing that’s typically Delhi- like, the people, language, food, and customs are all a confluence of different cultures coming from different time periods, from different geographies, from the past as well as the present.
In fact, the city stands like an old bottle with new wine. Partition of India took away most of its original inhabitants and filled it with migrants, a trend that continues even today. The flavor, though, is predominantly Punjabi, in food, culture and habits, a race that is known for their fun loving and enterprising nature.

The city is liberally dotted with relics and buildings, particularly Old Delhi, belonging to the Mughal period, some obscure some truly grand. Interspersed between them are modern ugly buildings that cropped up more due to commercial needs than due to any developmental planning. And sitting at the heart, amidst this maze of different architecture, is the city’s most popular identity, the Connaught Place, also a reminder of the British rule in India.
Though officially renamed as Indira Gandhi Chowk, it is still habitually called CP or Connaught Place by most Delhiites. Its regular, white colored circle of buildings with corridors and pillars remind us of the typical British love for tradition and structure. Close to CP, stands the Rastrapati Bhawan or the Residence of the President of India, the former residence of British Viceroy Lord Hardinge that combines both Mughal and Western architecture and is symbolic of Delhi’s status as the capital city of India.

Most of the globally popular Indian dishes originate from Delhi. The Chicken Tikka and Dal Makhani rule the taste buds of both the Punjabi and the non-Punjabi.
The city has two airports, Palam and the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The former caters to internal flights while the latter links Delhi to the entire world, with airways of almost every country touching down its tarmac. Delhi winters are very appealing, though for almost seven months of the year between April to September, the heat can get very oppressive.
Delhi’s radius has been expanding rapidly both geographically and infrastructure wise keeping up with the large influx of people who move to Delhi looking for work opportunities and end up making it their home.
The city supports a population of more than 12 million, but the rising stress on its infrastructure has made it important for the city to grow continuously. The city administration is busy with several projects designed towards improving public works, industrial areas, water and power supply and public transport and hopes to make it one of the most spruced up cities in the country before the commencement of the Commonwealth Games that it is scheduled to be held in the Delhi in the year 2010.
