Poland was conceived in the
10th century and its history has been rife
with conflict. In 1918 Poland regained its
independence from Russia, Prussia and Austria
only to be taken over by Germany and the Soviet
Union in World War II.
In
order to convert Poland’s
poor economy a "shock therapy" program
was conceived and this converted the economy
to one of the strongest in Central Europe in
the 1980’s. Nonetheless Poland now currently
suffers from high unemployment and low GDP
(Gross Domestic Profit) growth. In 1999 Poland
joined NATO and the European Union in 2004.

Poland is bordered by Belarus,
Czech Republic, Germany, Lithuania, Russia,
Slovakia, and the Ukraine. Poland has a population
of 38.5 million of which 90% is Roman Catholic.
Poland
has a great deal to offer tourists with its
golden Baltic coastal beaches to the north
and the rocky crags of the Tatras to the
south. There are the Bieszczady Mountains
for enthusiastic hikers and for water sporting
fans there’s the breathtaking
system of the great Mazurian Lakes.
Poland is steeped in history
and has carefully restored its old town complexes,
the Royal castles of Krakow and Warsaw, also
the past capital, and ancient palaces erected
by Poland's magnates. There are also numerous
museums to visit.
The
Poles take to heart the proverb that ‘into -a guest in the house
is God in the house.’ Which means that
despite how rich they are and where they live,
Poles draw on their tradition of -Slavic Hospitality-
they greet visitors from anywhere with kindness
and friendliness. Poles have fought to maintain
their individual sense of culture and community.
